Gnus has already been split into non-FSF owned Gnus branches -- I believe several of the T-Gnus, Chao-Gnus, Nana-Gnus, Et-Gnus, Shoe-Gnus, Semi-Gnus etc branches includes, or included at some point in time, non-FSF owned code that implements additional features. FWIW, I'd contribute to the bundled version as well.
