I'm experimenting inputing Latin-0 characters. It appears that I can
see these characters correctly (my XEmacs uses ISO-8859-15 fonts). However,
the content-transfer-encoding header says that the message uses latin-1 :-/ ?

And here ? ½ ¼ ¤ ¢

        the content-type header, I meant.

Same problem here : I see the euro symbol since I am using the
ISO-8859-15 but I can only post ISO-8859-15 when I answer to an
ISO-8859-15 message.

Moreover, why :
lisp/ChangeLog: * gnus.el (gnus-default-posting-charset):
Bogus. Removed.

How to default to ISO-8859-15 without this ?

Do you use XEmacs/MULE? If not, I don't think Gnus can know what
character set you use.

What is the value of `message-default-charset'?

> And here ? ½ ¼ ¤ ¢

Latin-1 both places (as the encoding indicates).

You mean you don't see oe, OE, Euro and cent symbols ? What do you see ?

In XEmacs 21.4.6, with intlfonts-1.1 installed:

The correct latin-1 glyphs, 1/2, 1/4, Currency and Cent.

Whatever come default with the stable Debian/X11 package.

I don't really understand the "what's your fonts" question. Emacs is
supposed to find the font that fits the characters for you, or display
a square if it can't find an appropriate font.

Maybe you have selected the latin-9 font in a way that makes XEmacs
think it is appropriate for latin-1 characters?

That's exactly what surprised me, hence the question. I've specified
latin 15 in X resources, but I'm surprised that XEmacs thinks it's ok for
displaying latin-1.

If you use XEmacs/nomule then Emacs does not try to figure this out,
I think. I just uses the font you tell it to.

M-f and M-b will give surprising results with EBCDIC fonts (say).

That's why I don't recommend to do this. Use XEmacs/mule and use its
iso-8859-15 option. If XEmacs supports iso-8859-15, that is.

Ever by adding ISO 8859-15 support in XEmacs, Gnus keeps posting in
ISO 8859-1.

XEmacs/Mule and ¤¤¤ character. The problem is that I could use the
"currency" character in this post ; I am seeing euro because I am
using a 8859-15 font. I am not sure of who has to notice that (XEmacs
or Gnus).

It does sound like an XEmacs issue rather than a Gnus issue.

Tell XEmacs that you want iso-8859-15. For example,
(set-language-environment "Latin-9") or so.

And then, you can write a mail with ¤ (currency) and it will be

Yes. However, shift-4 will yield a euro instead of the currency
symbol if you change the language environment.

If you don't want to frob your language environment (I never touch
those things, the defaults should work), you can also use a euro
environment:

$ LANG=sv_SE@euro emacs -q -f gnus

Then shift-4 yields a currency symbol, altgr-4 dollar and altgr-e a
euro.

My 0.02 SEK. :-)
