M-x elp-instrument-package RET gnus RET (try `mail' and `nn' as well)
and post the M-x elp-results RET.
`c' the C-g'ed backtrace and C-g it a few more times could be useful
as well, to make sure the backtrace reflects what is really spending
all the time.
