I tracked this down as a Customize or a Customize-usage problem in
Gnus (I don't know the first thing about Customize so I couldn't tell
the difference, even after edebuging through the lot of it), I think I
mailed a bug report about it somewhere.

It should be possible to reproduce this problem simply by putting a
group parameter such as

((foo . "42"))

or something, and invoke `gnus-group-customize'.
