Could you evaluate
(setq imap-log "*imap-log*")
and tick-mark an article + exit the group + enter the group, and send
me the contents of the *imap-log* buffer?

It's not a feature.

Hm, I'm not sure this is possible, Gnus doesn't have the case of a
tick-set failure. But nnimap might signal an error if it's unable to
set flags requested by Gnus. But some servers don't implement tick
flags, or all flags are read-only, or whatever, and in that case
nnimap wouldn't work at all. Hm, perhaps the *imap-log* will give
more details to what kind of error this is.
