[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 259 bytes --]

A friend of mine has things of this sort attached to every email he
sends:

Content-Type: application/ms-tnef;
	name="winmail.dat"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
	filename="winmail.dat"

Here's what it looks like decoded:

[-- Attachment #2: decoded winmail.dat --]
[-- Type: application/octet-stream, Size: 1384 bytes --]

[-- Attachment #3: Type: text/plain, Size: 4880 bytes --]

Can pgnus extract any usable information from this winmail.dat
thingie?

Here's the complete message for reference:

Try putting

application/ms-tnef; tnef2txt %s; copiousoutput

in your ~/.mailcap and be sure to install

http://www.fiction.net/blong/programs/tnef2txt/tnef2txt-1.4.tar.gz

in your path.

The MAPI winmail.dat stuff should turn up when you click on the
attachment if you use gnus from cvs (includes the patch below), for
earlier versions you'll have to switch to buffer *mm* by yourself.

1999-11-29  Simon Josefsson  <jas@pdc.kth.se>

	* mm-decode.el (mm-display-external): For `copiousoutput' methods,
	switch to buffer after calling program.

Did you look at what that looks like base64-decoded? It is abysmal binary
garbage, you can ALMOST see bits and pieces of his textual email in there,
but barely.  Things like

I waI^D go^K\200g ^K\200

^K == 'i'
\200 == 'n'

WTF?

Heh - yeah, I took a look in there and was really curious about what
micro$soft was up to with all that binary crap. Did you see Simon's
post to the list with tnef2txt, et. al.? Pretty nifty stuff - thanks,
Simon.

Shouldn't it simply insert the output into the existing buffer?

The "external" in `mm-display-external' led me to believe it should be
"external" in some sense, altough another emacs buffer isn't very
external it is more external than inlining it. Um. I don't really
know. Opinions?

Putting it in the existing buffer should be fine from a practical
point of view. It can easily be hidden again.

It invokes an external command, thus the name.

The distinction is unimportant for other "external" things because
they other don't have output, or require a terminal. But with useful
output, I think it would be perfectly fine to insert it in the current
buffer. As Bill white said, there is no practical reason not to do
so, at least provided that the "Save..." menu entry et al. still work.

External means "outside of Emacs". If it's not outside of Emacs, then
it should insert into the article buffer.

Ok, clicking on a application/ms-tnef attachment and having

application/ms-tnef; tnef2txt %s; copiousoutput

in your ~/.mailcap should now (current CVS) insert the ouput in the
article buffer.

1999-12-04  Simon Josefsson  <jas@pdc.kth.se>

	* mm-decode.el (mm-display-part): Let mm-display-external return
	inline or external.
	(mm-display-external): For copiousoutput methods, insert output in
	buffer.
