With this amount of detail, you should be able to pinpoint the exact patch that introduce the damage by doing a binary search in CVS. That is, check out Gnus 5.10.2 from CVS and then use 'cvs upd -D 2003-x-y' to move forward a week or so (you need to figure out which date 5.10.2 was release on first, and use that as the starting point) until it stops working, then track it down to the day it stopped working, and then hour, and then send a diff of the minimal patch that break things.
