I recall seeing similar reports from time to time, and I'm not sure it has ever been fully tracked down. FWIW, I use CVS Gnus on CVS Emacs, Cyrus IMAPD 2.1.15, agent enabled (and typically always online), many client instances (although only one of them is Gnus), and I use tick marks extensively and have never seen this. Finding a recipe, and *imap-log* traces, on reproducing this would help.
