Hello
Some when between Oort 5.19 and Gnus 5.10 the naming convention for
groups from the primary select-method seems to have changed. Before
when I subscribed to foo.bar.baz on my primary server, the group
appeared as foo.bar.baz in groups buffer, now it's
nntp+127.0.0.1:foo.bar.baz.
I don't know if this change was intentional, but if it was I strongly
disagree with it and vote for reverting it.

Subscribe to a new group from the primary server. The group now has
the long name in the summary buffer.
Try G e C-c C-c or G E C-c C-c on the group. Spooky...

I can't reproduce this, are you sure you don't have a server
nntp:127.0.0.1 defined and subscribed some group on it?

It kind of looks like what one might see if running thru a ssh tunnel.

I'm absolutely sure. I hit F to find new groups on my local news server
and got the message "one group arrived", then I tried to U name.of.group
but Gnus told me "no match". Then I entered server buffer, hit <ret> with
point over the server (my only nntp server, no ssh connection) and all
old groups were shown with the correct names, only the new one had the
nntp+127.0.0.1: prefix.
The same error was reported in the German gnus newsgroup
de.comm.software.gnus, too. The guy there used AFAIK also a news server
running on localhost, perhaps this is an issue. An other possible reason
might be, that I fetch news from the same server (localhost) I fetch my
mail via pop3.
Here are the relevant parts of my .gnus:
(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "127.0.0.1"))
(require 'nnir)
(add-to-list 'gnus-secondary-select-methods '(nnml "" (nnir-search-engine swish++)))
;;Woher kommen die Mails?
(setq mail-sources '((pop :server "localhost"
:user "******"
:password "******")))
(setq gnus-group-line-format "%P%M%S[%5t]%5y : %(%g%)\n")

There was a change to gnus-group-prefixed-name recently, maybe you can
try to revert that patch, or try the patch below.

The patch didn't help, I'll try to test if it works with the old
gnus-group-prefixed-name later.

Ah, here I am.
> used AFAIK also a news server running on localhost, perhaps this is an
> issue.
I've the same problems with leafnode+ on a BSD box and with Hamster on
a Windows Box.
Server Buffer:
{nntp:localhost} (opened)
Group Buffer with subscribed group from Server Buffer:
nntp+localhost:de.comp.os.unix.shell
G E says:
("nntp+localhost:de.comp.os.unix.shell" 3
(1 190)
((seen
(2 . 240))))
Another problem is, that those groups are not updated when starting
Gnus, nor when setting `gnus-activate-foreign-newsgroups' to `3'.
`gnus-group-check-bogus-groups' erases nntp groups with a server prefix
and kills all the information in `~/newsrc.eld'.

Well, I was a bit quick with saying the patch doesn't help. After
applying the patch, I can indeed subscribe to the group by saying U
name.of.group in summary buffer.
However my normal method, entering server buffer, entering the server
there (point over server, <ret>) and then subscribing to the group by
saying `u' still doesn't work, I get the described prefix.
