Looking at nnimap, it seems like it would work. n-c-i is called during splitting and in nnimap-request-accept-article which should cover most normal methods to insert articles in groups. (Although expiry-target's are probably not covered.) The nnmail-cache-accepted-message-ids variable must be set though, but maybe with your code that variable could default to t (unless that changes something else too).
