FWIW, I believe JEmacs' goal is to run ELisp (unmodified hanoi.el work) so there is no need to rewrite Gnus. But since it is java, we'd get access to portable libraries (Curys SASL, a nice widget library etc). It's also multithreaded, and uses Unicode. If you can compile python or perl into java bytecode, you could run that code in JEmacs too. (Oh. What's that? Slow? Oh yes.)
