Does anyone know what the motivation for the patch was?  If we revert
the patch, we might re-introduce an old bug...  Of course, if there is
agreement to revert the patch, I think all committers could do it.

Hm.  To make things easier to evaluate: if someone thinks reverting
this is wrong, please say so.
