Thanks! It seems the gnus-range functions are the major culprit.
nnml/nnfolder-request-set-mark consumed 1-2 % of the time.
nn*-request-update-info wasn't called though, maybe it is only called
when doing M-g instead of entering the group?
Maybe someone could try replacing the gnus-range-* functions with
simple list manipulation functions to see how much the range functions
really increase performance. They seem to consume quite some time..
Take a backup first, though. :)

Perhaps the emacs developers would like a bug report. Assuming the
latest pretest exhibits the same problem.
