It doesn't seem like Gnus violates the protocol, but I suspect Gnus sends too much data and the network or some part of the server is dropping some of it, so the IMAP parser in the server receive invalid data. Can this be it? It might happen if you connect via a shell stream. I think you can disable the behaviour by toggling `nnimap-retrieve-groups-asynchronous', but nnimap will be a little slower.
