I also made some bug workaround code conditional on =E2=80=98nnimap-need-unselect-to-notice-new-mail=E2=80=99 as well (defaults= to nil), so if you use a IMAP server that doesn't notice new mail in a group unless you select another group, try enabling it (and please tell me if you need to, if several people need it maybe it should be the default). The report about the bug was against a (now) old version of UoW with some uncommon mail backend, I believe.
