Nnimap uses UIDs from the server, which are garanteed to be monotonously increasing, but not contigious or starting at a small value (but that's often the case however) which Gnus prefers. I can't think of a better way to assign article numbers than using the UID. Even more difficult would be to try to "guess" when UIDs have characteristics that Gnus doesn't like, and convert them only in that case.
