Evaluate
(setq smtpmail-debug-info t)
and you'll get a SMTP protocol trace in a buffer "*trace of SMTP
session to whatever*".
Perhaps your server require authentication, in that case there are
some stuff at http://www.pdc.kth.se/~jas/emacs-rfc2554.html.
