(setq gnus-check-new-newsgroups nil) to disable it. > 2. splitting is working, I've confirmed this on the server, but I > don't see new groups in *Group* buffer. ... > (setq gnus-check-new-newsgroups 'always) ; queries back ends for new groups even when you do the g command The nnimap splitter doesn't imap-subscribe auto-created groups, you need to do that manually. g-c-n-n only gnus-subscribe imap-subscribed mailboxes, which is slow and only useful if you create groups using other IMAP clients often, and want Gnus to notice them.
