Hello-hello
I'm trying to use STARTTLS for sending eMail.
starttls.el looks for "starttls" but cannot find it
(because it is not installed), but it does not use
gnutls-cli (which is installed).
(setq smtpmail-default-smtp-server "smtp.$NAME.de")
(setq smtpmail-smtp-server "smtp.$NAME.de")
(setq smtpmail-smtp-service 587)
(setq smtpmail-auth-credentials '(("smtp.$NAME.de" 587 "user" "password")))
(setq smtpmail-starttls-credentials '(("smtp.$NAME.de" 587 nil nil)))
(which, according to the documentation, should work...)
And it works with port 25, so servername, user & password are correct.

What happens when you try to send an e-mail with this configuration?
How do you know gnutls-cli is not used?

It works too. But without STARTTLS.
> How do you know gnutls-cli is not used?
"strace -f" starttls is searched but not found. "gnutls-cli" isn't
mentioned anywhere
in the log file.

Are you using the XEmacs mail-lib smtpmail.el? It doesn't support
starttls via GnuTLS. I've fixed that in XEmacs CVS now, so try the
new packages when they are released.

I've just pre-released a new version,
norbert.
