Now this is getting weird.  For me, browsing it worked great.  Whoo-hoo!
Then I quit from the foreign server browser buffer, hit G in my normal
group buffer, and got:

Signaling: (error "Selecting deleted or non-existent buffer")
  gnus-read-active-file()
  gnus-group-get-new-news(nil)
  call-interactively(gnus-group-get-new-news)
