This was because the news server was down for several hours, and it was being a pain to have to ^C out of the news checking to get the mail. I believe the problem I describe below actually started while the news was down, and before I changed the .gnus.el to make nnml the primary server. Now, when I get mail, gnus puts it into the appropriate folders, but doesn't display the number of unread messages in the folders, and when I find them using j in the summary buffer, they aren't sorted right. How do I fix this?
