I assume you are running this framey stuff via the XEmacs toolbar news 
button?  Well, the command `toolbar-news' puts the frame-removing code 
to `gnus-exit-gnus-hook'.

Lars, does `z' run `gnus-exit-gnus-hook'?  If not, why not?
