Yes, there is. You can put the x-face adding to message-send-hook,
and read it from a file. For instance:
(add-hook 'message-send-hook
(lambda ()
(goto-char (point-min))
(insert "~/.x-face")))
...and keep your x-face in ~/.x-face, unescaped.
