Ha! I'd bet Mule is just the immediate excuse. In many XEmacs flamewars Erik has been explaining that he had no problems whatsoever cooperating with Stallman. It would be too much to admit that he doesn't like Stallman's way of handling things. So he says he doesn't like MULE. This is a good reason not to upgrade. You could say the same for Emacs 18.59, for instance -- and you would be equally justified.
