I seem to have missed this patch.  Why don't you customize the Gnus
faces to be colorless?

Custom will respect setq forms.  Custom is not defvoo(doo).

Only if you use customize, and explicitely choose `Save for future
sessions' button.  Even so, the XEmacs version doesn't use `.emacs'.
