curiosity question

   * Gnus now has its own startup file (`.gnus') to avoid cluttering up
     the `.emacs' file.

(yea I know this isn't exactly news, but ...)

Other than avoiding clutter are there any other reasons to us a .gnus
file?

  I allow the user to have a ~/.w3/profile file that gets loaded so that I
can read/write to it instead of having to grok an entire .emacs file when
doing customizations (There are some preferences panels in Emacs-W3 -
haven't moved to custom yet).

Well, the .gnus.el file is read each time you start Gnus, which can be
good or bad.  Also, many of the Gnus variables are defined when
.gnus.el is evaled, which can be a plus.  Or not.

	Ah ha.  That explains a problem I once had.  I guess maybe it
	will be worth the effor to move things around after all.

Anything that you would put in .gnus can go in .emacs.  But, do you
really want or need to load all that cruft when you do not need it?  I
do not -- my .gnus (actually .gnus.el because I byte-compile it) is 10K.
Even for those packages that do not have their own separate
customization files I have eval-after-loads for them which load the
separate config files.
