Where can I find the nndb database thing that the nndb backend is
supposed to connect to?

What is an `nndb' backend?

It a mail backend that reads from an nntp-like database-based server.

Oooh, yeah. I have the latest version, as I just did some work on
it. I'll put it up somewhere. The nndb.el that ships with Gnus
doesn't work with the nndb that I have. The nndb tarball contains a
working version, however.

Btw, nndb is a sort of a personal NNTP server written in perl. It
supports a number of unofficial NNTP extensions that allow it to
operate effectively on mail. There has been a non-functional (at
least with my version of nndb) Gnus backend for it shipping since
September Gnus, I think.

In any case, it was written to make reading mail with Gnus faster, yet
still reliable. It supports command extensions that allow for the
posting, splitting, deletion, copying, and (now) expiry of mail on the
server itself.

New is 0.15 is server side expiry.

Ok, I've put it up at:

Has anyone done a comparison between nndb and the NNML Module that's
on CPAN? It sounds like they're functionally similar.

Mike.

After some fiddling (I had to install libnet, IO, Data-Dump, and
MailTools first), nndb is now up, I think.

I have the following in my .forward file:

"|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/local/bin/nndel || exit 75 #larsi"

nndb --verbose has this to say:

AUTHINFO: USER larsi
AUTHINFO: PASS <censored>
POSTRULE:
Can't use string ("From larsi@proletcult.slip.ifi.u") as a symbol ref while "strict refs" in use at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/Mail/Internet.pm line 196, <GEN2> chunk 23.

What does this mean?

What version of MailTools did you install? Some versions have this problem

I think it would be a good idea to use the nndb.el that comes with
nndb rather than the very old non-functional thing that comes with
Gnus.

The functionality is similar. The point with NNML is, that it nicely
coexists with the nnml backend (nndb stuffs the articles in a database
(by default at least)). I once hacked it to leave the articles in the
directories. Don't know if this option still works). You can use both
simultaneously on the same directories. This is nice for syncronizing
mail directories. up- and downloding can be done with nnsync/nnmirror
which syncronizes using NNTP. I currently use it to syncronize between
my SUN at the office, my Linux box at home. Also is use if for offline
news reading at home (nntp backend).

This problem occurs because the Mail::Internet constructor interface
changed a bit. It now wants array references rather than arrays. So
all that needs to be done is to change "... new Mail::Internet @array"
to "... new Mail::Internet \@array", I think.

Well, I haven't studied Ulrich's NNML module fully, but the difference
is in what purpose they perform (and, of course, the functionality
they provide). NNML takes Gnus created and managed nnml groups and
serves them up via NNTP. The purpose of this, it seems, is to be able
to easily move mail from one Gnus installation to another.

nndb, on the other hand, takes over the management of mail, relegating
Gnus to the role of a client. nndb is much larger and has a bunch of
features to allow Gnus to manage mail via NNTP extensions. The purpose
of this was to have a faster backend than nnml/procmail/whatever.
