Indeed! I use a 9x15 font with XEmacs which does not have a corresponding
italics font. Previous XEmacsen picked very ugly replacements for it; I finally
managed to hack it such that italic font properties are ignored.  This looks
better, usuallu, but... only when this thread started did I discover that Gnus
treats forward slashes special as well...

Probably gnus-treat-emphasize should default to nil.
