Marsupials do indeed exist in the Americas, but not in the same
abundance or variety as Australia.
I looked this up:
Hypertext Webster Gateway: "opossum"
From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) (web1913)
Opossum \O*pos"sum\, n. [Of N. American Indian origin.] (Zool.)
Any American marsupial of the genera Didelphys and Chironectes. The
common species of the United States is Didelphys Virginiana.
From WordNet (r) 1.6 (wn)
opossum n 1: small furry Australian arboreal marsupials having long
usually prehensile tails [syn: {phalanger}, {possum}] 2: nocturnal
arboreal marsupial having a naked prehensile tail found from southern
North America to northern South America [syn: {possum}]
The variety described in number 2 of the WordNet definition is the one
that I was referring to in my previous message.
I suppose I should just email this privately, but since Lars requested
names of "P" animals, I guess this is sort-of on topic ... :)
