Something called the "[o]possum" also inhabits the U.S. ... the animal
is also a marsupial, but it's larger, slower, blinder, and dumber than
a squirrel.  It has a pointed snout and long, thin tail which make it
look a bit like an oversized, mentally deficient rat.  Most people
call them "possums" here, also, and the offical, dictionary name
("opossum") tends to be used only by nitpickers and stuffed shirts
these days.  Not being either (well, at least not being a stuffed
shirt <g>), I'm not sure why I even mentioned "opossum" in the first
place.  :)

Actually, I like it more and more all the time, if I do say so myself.
Add my "Pan Troglodytes Gnus" vote to the list.
