When reading a nnvirtual group I only get the message: 'nntp reading'
in the minibuffer, not much bells and whistles, couldn't we have a
siren wailing, some cheerleaders pop up and dance for each group?

Naah honestly, would it be possible to output something like reading
group X, Y, Z??

BTW I have tried the gnus-verbose once a time ago, but didn't notice
any difference, was it me who missed anything or it doesn't work?

Nope.  The "nntp reading" message will also be history when things
start working ok.

The useful message is the "Prefetching article nnnn..." message.  I've
learned not to hit "n" before it stops prefetching. :-)
