Well, winter is approaching, so perhaps I should start doing something
about those Gnus college sweatshirts?

I've now made a preliminary schetch of the image on the back of the
shirt. It's a biiig gnu with a smaller legend that reads:

Member of the Gnus Development Team
Red Gnus
People's Democratic Newsreader

I don't like the word "team" -- it sounds so, well, team-like.
Anobody got any ideas?

I should probably reverse the r's and n's to make it look more
Russian-like.

This sweatshirt will be limited to people on the ding mailing list
only, and will be the only Red Gnus merchandice, I guess. The price
will be approx. USD 30.

How about "soviet"? As far as I remember, it means "council".

Could I request an option to buy an XXXL for slightly more? My september
gnus tshirt wasn't 100% wearable. *sigh* Having big shoulders sucks. I
knew I shouldn't have worked on the farm so long. :)

What colors were you thinking about? (The Gnus will be Red, obviously)

How about "collective", "commune", "coop", "cooperative" ...

It's nice that they all begin with a "c". I can kinda see the "c"
being the blade of a sickle with a little hammer crossing it.

crew
company
squad
contingent
corps

(from the MS-Word thesaurus).

I like "squad" or "corps" myself.

Also, will the motto "In a cloud, bones of steel" be on the shirt?

Lets see, the Wordserver suggested a whole pile of synonyms:

party, faction, side, solidarity, brotherhood, guild, company, cohort
are a few. :-)

How about ``cadre''?

cad-re \'kad-re^-, 'ka^:d-, -,ra^-\
[F, fr. It quadro, fr. L quadrum square -- more at QUARREL]
1: FRAME, FRAMEWORK
2: a nucleus or core group esp. of trained personnel able to assume
     control and to train others
3a: a cell of indoctrinated leaders active in promoting the interests
     of a revolutionary party
3b: a member of a cadre, esp. a political cadre

all the work. Something to the effect of

Another thought: I'd be more fun to wear merchandise for the next

you to stop the Red Couture, mind you.

But I didn't do practically all the work. I mean, I generate most of
the code, but that's only half the job. All the boring testing and
much of the fixing is done by people on this mailing list. If I were
to do development "properly" -- regression testing and stuff -- I
wouldn't be able to produce one fourth of the feetchers I do now...

It says "Red Gnus" in big letters below this line, so that would mean
repeating oneself...

Development and Reeducation Cadre

is of the approprite length. Hm.

What font would be best here? Something that looks like a Russian
1920's font? It would be a small caps font, I guess, but the ones
I've tried don't look quite right.

I think "Gnus Reeducation Camp Staff" would be a more appropriate
shirt. Just ask the people in my office.

How about "Cult of Gnus Trainee". Our new motto: "Gnus is not a cult,
it is a religion."

Really, across the front, it says "Gnus Reeducation Camp", and on the
back, it has the gnu with the word "Staff" on the top.

And the "Republic" in "Union of Soviet Socialists Republic" is not? :).

Hrm... how about "Soviet Socialist Republic of Gnus" :). We could even

<Quibble>
Actually, that's "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" and so it

really isn't redundant (i.e. the USSR was the union of the Soviet
Socialist Republic of Byelorussia, the Soviet Socialist Republic of

Yes, it's nice, but somewhat brutal, isn't it?

"Camp Soviet" would be kinda excessive, wouldn't it?

Hm. Is it "Re-education" or "reeducation"?

Development and Reeducation Cadre
Development and Re-education Cadre
Gnus Re-education Camp Staff
Gnus Re-education Soviet Staff
Ministry of Development Staff

Or perhaps:

Ministry of Development and Re-education

:-)

If I were to print on both sides, it would cost USD 6 more per shirt,
which is a bit much, I think.
