Crashed server, started from scratch, lots of 'read'.

Our newsserver crashed, and had to be rebuilt from scratch, now when I
fire up my gnus I have lots of groups with 0 articles in them, guess
it will take some time for me to get some unread articles I think.. 

Ahh well is there any easy way to 'reset' the newsgroups? could also
be welcome when moving to other servers/locations and wanting to
preserve the newsgroups, not needing to preserve what articles I have
read.

This would be a nice feature to have. I remember this happening here
a long time ago, S.E., (Sgnus Era); it might have been a server crash,
but the newsadmin managed to munge everything on the server so the
article numbers *it* knew about were smaller than the ones in the
.newsrc, so now new articles appeared.

My fix was to  just wipe .newsrc and start from scratch...

[Aside: We just got another convert to gnus here (under xemacs 19.13,
though; and an old sgnus) and the start-up without a .newsrc
displayed an empty buffer-page. I noticed that there was no prompt of
any kind as to what to do next (I just showed him how to use 'j' and
pick the groups he wanted). It would have been nice if it asked
whether the user would like to subscribe to a newsgroup or
something...]

It should have subscribed him to the Gnus help group and some newsuser
groups, at least.  Perhaps it was a buggy version of September?

Well, I think you can manually edit your .newsrc file and remove all the 
article numbers (after the "NEWSGROUP:" or "NEWSGROUP!" on each line).  I'm 
not quite sure how to gracefully get rid of the memory of marked articles from 
the .newsrc.eld file though.

This was my solution, but life always becomes a bit exciting when
fiddling with .newsrc.eld. And I wonder if every1 can stand the
pressure :-)

Don't forget ~/News/cache/active.  Gnus seems to use information from
that as well.  I couldn't figure out why comp.dcom.telecom kept coming
up with over 27000 unread articles, though the server said the highest
one was under 400.

Remove your .newsrc.eld, edit your .newsrc to remove article numbers,
and start Gnus.

Alternatively, edit each group ('G e' in summary buffer) and clear out
all numerical data (read, cached, ticked, etc).

Wouldn't that lose info about killed groups? If not, how would gnus
distinguish between a new group and a killed group?

Yes, it most certainly will do exactly that.  It is not a particularly
pretty way to do it, but it is the fastest.

I see my From: header ;-) it is probably some virus on your computer
sent out from the NSA trying to hide me from you, because I come from
a country better then the US ;-))

I am thinking.. hmm keep the counts for foreign servers.. 

Another feature that might help people moving around is maybe
functionality to make the primary nntp-server a foreign?

This would be useable for people moving to be able to stay in touch
with the old newsserver, meybe to ease up switching to a new server,
and keep the groups that might not exist on the new server.

I'm getting confused as to the difference between the native server and the
foreign servers.  Have things become abstracted enough that the only real
differences are that the native server doesn't appear as a prefix to the
newsgroup name, and some of its parameters are read from environment
variables (NNTPSERVER)?
