I seem to recall that in the past, ticked articles were automatically
cached. I have depended on that fact in the past, but recently I have
received evidence that this might not be the case (any more?). I
actually like the idea that ticked articles are automatically cached.
Is there any way to make this behaviour standard?

See the variables gnus-cache-enter-articles and
gnus-cache-remove-articles. gnus-use-cache must be set to t for these
to work.

I use pgnus 0.42 and gnus-cache-enter-articles is (ticked dormant) and
gnus-cache-remove-articles is (read).

As Kai pointed out, if gnus-use-cache is t then ticked and dormant are
automatically cached except in uncacheable groups (typically mail
groups). He also points out that this can be customized with
gnus-cache-enter-articles and gnus-cache-remove-articles. That latter
defaults to (read), which may cause some grief if you use * to cache
articles rather than tick'ing or marking as dormant since the article
will be removed as soon as it's read. If you're using the cache to
preserve articles beyond a news server's expiration then that is less
than ideal. I found that out the hard way so I have since gone to
marking as dormant to preserve such articles. Just in case, though, I
have also set gnus-cache-remove-articles to nil.
