Sorry -- I hope I'm not missing something that is documnted.

Installing 5.8.7 seems to have made nnimap no longer look at my
~/.authinfo file. I didn't change any configuration -- it worked with
5.8.4, and now doesn't; I'm now prompted each time for username and
password.

Hm. Does it help to frob the server name in ~/.authinfo? Suppose you
have (nnimap "foo" (nnimap-address "bar") ...) as server definition,
what happens if you put `machine foo' in there? `machine bar'? If
you have (nnimap "" (nnimap-address "bar")...), you can only use
`machine bar', of course.

Maybe something like this changed.

Um. I have the latter situation i.e. I have specified

(nnimap "" (nnimap-address "bar"))

(and the .authinfo entry is indeed 'machine bar').

I got nowhere by first trying to add 'foo' to the server definition;
any tips on how to proceed? (I guess 'foo' should be a virtual server
name? I wasn't able to access any of the imap mailboxes when I added
the virtual server name to my imap server command).

Hm. I have the same situation, and it works. Strange. Here's the
last entry in lisp/ChangeLog:

/----
| 2000-07-01 10:23:08 Shenghuo ZHU <zsh@cs.rochester.edu>

I'll try to do a CVS update to see if this problem appears for me,
too. Then we know it must be in the last few changes.

The group names must be changed from nnimap:group to
nnimap+foo:group. This is not worth it, I think.

A port option was added since 5.8.5. I guess you missed "port imap"
for the entry of ~/.authinfo file. For example,

machine imap.you.com login USER password PASSWD port imap

I've been having problems with v5.8.7, too; my previous version
(updated from cvs on May 10 or so) worked fine. I've now gotten
things working, but I don't know why what I did should have helped.
Here's what I did: I deleted the "default" line from .authinfo. I
used to have

machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH
  default login anonymous password palmieri@math.washington.edu

With the latest version of gnus, it was passing "anonymous" as the
username and "palmieri@math.washington.edu" as the password, and so
the login was failing.

Now I have

machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH

and it seems to work. Adding "port imap" to the first line didn't
help, either. (In fact, when I did this with the old cvs version, it
stopped working--it started prompting me for my username and
password. Adding it to the end of the single line in my current
.authinfo file doesn't seem to have any effect, good or bad.)

Nnimap used to have a hack that allowed you to specify the virtual
server name in .authinfo files, and nnimap tried to look up this name
("" in your case) -- and received the default entry back...

I've now removed the hack from cvs.

Also, the "port imap" statement shouldn't be required. (But doesn't
harm anything.)

rats, that didn't help. My .authinfo now looks as above, all works OK
in 5.8.4 (and it also works OK in 5.8.6 on my machine at school
where I've apparently been more vigilant in keeping up versions...)

But it does not work under 5.8.7.

Do you have any "default" lines in your ~/.authinfo file? Can you
check the copy in CVS (or fetch a snapshot later tonight) if it work?

For completeness, what's your entire .authinfo file (w/o passwords),
and what's your entire gnus-secondary-select-methods?

Right. Gnus in cvs now check `nnimap-server-address' too.

(The variable was obsoleted 1998-12-04, guess it's too early to drop
support for it. :-))

Ouch! Is that necessary? I for one use that hack quite a bit. I
use SSH to port forward tunnels to my various IMAP servers. Thus,
localhost:1500 goes to one IMAP server, localhost:1600 goes to
another. Since both machine names in this case are "localhost", I
have to use nnimap's virtual server name in my .authinfo file to
distinguish between the two.

Having said that, the nnimap hack doesn't appear to be working, even in
released 5.8.7. I've got the following lines in my .authinfo:

,-----
| machine personal login brierley
| machine work login brierley
| machine client login brierley
`-----

And machines "personal" and "work" now ask me for my username.
Machine "client" does not. The only difference that I can see is
that personal and work are in gnus-secondary-select-methods while
client is a foreign server.

You don't have to use the virtual server name, you can now use the
port.

The same functionality should be possible to achieve with documented
methods, so ...

Try something like

machine localhost port 1500 login ...
machine localhost port 1600 login ...

for your setup. Does it work?

Yup, that works fine. Sorry, for some silly reason I thought port
had to be a name (i.e. imap or nntp), I didn't realize it could
actually be any port you want. This works fine for my SSH
forwarding purposes.

Thanks!

Ouch! That seems a bit harsh - when I upgrade, nnimap will suddenly
stop working and I won't know why.

Wouldn't it be better to just change the order to try the hostname
first?

If we did that and a user had 1) no entry for the hostname in authinfo
and 2) had a default entry in authinfo; he would get the default entry
instead and couldn't figure out why.

Perhaps the gnus-netrc-machine need even more functionality, so it
doesn't fall back on the "default" entry? Then nnimap could try the
hostname first, without default fallback, and then try the server
name, with default fallback.

Would it make sense for *-authinfo-file to be server variables? Then
you could have a separate file for each server, eliminate the need for
the port stuff, and just use a default entry in each one.
