Pardon me being so stupid, but is there any way for me to change one
of these "*" to a different character? Please tell me a one liner for
.gnus.el, and no some massive kludge. Thanks.

It looks like you've made changes to gnus-group-line-format because the default would not have two **s in a row like that, at least not according to the doc string. A quick look in gnus-group.el suggests the two format functions that put out * are not easily customizable.

I suppose since one can't change the * of %B to "o" for open, the
best I can do is use e.g., %1 on the other *.
(setq gnus-group-line-format "%B%1{%M%}%S%p%P%5y: %(%-50,50G%) %d\n")
(Wonder how long I can put up with that.)
Maybe this is where they are hardwired:
3 matches for ""\*"" in buffer: gnus-group.el.gz
477: (?N (cond ((eq number t) "*" )
1529: "*"))
1533: "*"))
