Only auto saving occured as detailed in the message. Not sure where you are getting the idea something has been saved. Maybe you misread C-x b, or maybe my typo threw you off. I'm saying this message was never overtly saved in any way. Only insofar as gnus keeps a running copy in drafts and auto saving occuring. So start a composition... leave it with C-x b (switch buffers) Come back later and maybe continue the composition. Finally with no overt save taking place C-x k (kill the buffer). That message should not show up in drafts..... at least it didn't used to.
