I asked the same question recently, and got the same response I'll give you:

For some reason, it appears for a while, then goes away eventually.  I
have no clue why.  I think old .ADAPT files have a weird bit set on
them or something, and eventually it all gets straightened out.

Mysterious.  Lars**2?  Any clues?
