Normal or not, I've seen it too.
Try it this way:
Remove '(gnus-agentize)' of .gnus.el or comment it out.
Go online, start emacs, M-x gnus RET, let Gnus read the active file.
After the active file is read in quit Gnus with 'q'.
Now you put (gnus-agentize) back at the end of .gnus.el
Now do 'M-x gnus' (still online) and it should work...
If your Gnus behaves like mine you should be able to start gnus-unplugged
from now on.
