Assuming "add" == untar the font tarballs. Do it on the machine the X server is running on (unless you're using a font server in which case they should be untarred on the machine the font server is running) or in directories that are NFS (or the equivalent) mounted on the machine the X server is running on. The font directories need to be visible to the X server somehow, regardless of how the display is redirected.
