The obvious reason being to make it possible to snag messages that weren't downloaded by category rules without having to leave the group. Another one Lars suggested would one day come to pass is to arrange for agentized posts to have the additional functions that are now only possible in mail groups. Since the files are on disk, a user should be able to manipulate them in any way that one can manipulate mail. Complicated expiry rules, editing in place, deletion, regeneration of NOV etc etc.
