Wouldn't the quick way be to get into the group parameters (G E) and
set them by hand? You ought to be able to get the article numbers
from the backup .newsrc.eld file. If the caching done by Gnus defeats
this, restart gnus immediately after making the changes or just edit
the .newsrc.eld file directly.
