FWIW, I started using offlineimap and Dovecot to sync from my Zimbra server because NNIMAP / Gnus was expanding the entire range at a few points just to do this. Which would cons a range of ~ 100,000 integers, do stuff, and then free it all. Which was ... painful. I never got around to identifying exactly where it was, though.
