Using the latest cvs gnus with emacs 21.4.1, is it possible to put some
newsgroups within a topic hierarchy and to keep other groups outside of
the hierarchy?
When I try to kill a group and then yank it to a place outside of my
topic hierarchy, this appears to work, but if I save and exit and then
return to gnus, that yanked group appears once again within the topic
hierarchy, but in a different position, and sometimes even within a
different topic, depending on where it was when I originally killed it.
Am I out of luck, or is there a way I can set up a hybrid
topic/non-topic configuration?
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK that's not possible currently. Topics are set up as a tree.
You can just start your hierarchy one below the root, and keep the root
level for "unclassified" groups.
