When I attempt to read the attached message in gnus (yesterday's CVS,
from emacs 20.7.1), I get asked where I want to save the MIME part.
When I ^G out of that, it does not display the message.

Odd. "It works for me." I had to do a view-image-as-type in order to
have it parsed as message/rfc822, but with that done, the message
looks normal to me. Raw text resulting from this is below; if the
urge moves you, you can see a screenshot at

Your screenshot shows that you're using xemacs. I switched yesterday
from xemacs to emacs (the xemacs upgrade to 21.4.3 seemed to have an
awful lot of gratuitous changes to it), and I don't yet have
everything configured the way I want it, and I may very well have
something misconfigured for emacs.

I saved that message, frobbed mbox format, did `G f' on it, selected
the message -- worx. I see the text/plain alternative. Hitting `K b'
allows me to toggle to text/html, which also works.

Works for me (similar configuration). Maybe it's a W3/url thing.
Could you toggle debug-on-quit and post the backtrace?

Here it is. I notice that it's still trying to read a bogus group
that I tried to read yesterday. So I tried opening the message in a
gnus in a different emacs, and it works for me there, too. So I don't
know whether this is a gnus bug or a gnus manifestation of an emacs
bug.

It looks like your mailcap/MIME/whatever configuration in the original
Emacs is messed up. Strange.

Speaking of MIME, the MIME menu has 'View all'. It might be nice if
there was a 'Collapse all' or something. I guess it's silly, but
when I've got a text/plain that I want to save I can never remember
the commands to toggle the buttons. I know it's something-t, but
invariably I have to C-h m and browse through all of that before an
"oh yeah" erupts.
Oh well, just rambling.

`g' does that nicely for me.

I guess I need to review my configs to make sure I don't have
something getting in the way. When I do that it just redisplays the
message as it's already displayed. I see no difference. If the
attachment is text/plain, it is just shown in-line without a button
in the article buffer to save just that attachment. I had to do M-t
to get the buttons to appear to be able to save that attachment. If
it matters I'm using xemacs-21.4.3.
Actually, I wouldn't mind if the buttons are *always* shown, even if
the attachment is shown in-line. At first I didn't even realize
that this text/plain was a separate attachment.

Does (setq gnus-unbuttonized-mime-types nil) do what you want?

FWIW, this happened to me recently when I compiled and installed Gnus before
w3. When I did it the other way around the problem went away.

Thanks. That'll do. I wonder if a button shouldn't appear if the
article has only
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Disposition: inline
and no other parts? Though, it's not a big deal either way.
Since I set that, I discovered that there are buttons I never knew
about, such as:
1. (*) text/plain ( ) text/html
That's cool. Personally I probably wouldn't ever click on the
text/html, but the capability is cool nonetheless.

I have figured out the problem. (It was happening far too often.) I
had been using xemacs, gnus compiled with xemacs, and w3 compiled with
xemacs. When I switched to emacs, I recompiled the gnus with emacs,
but didn't set up the w3. Not that I was trying to use the one
compiled with xemacs, but I was using the one that came with the
standard emacs distribution, that didn't know about my cvs gnus
installation. I have now downloaded the latest w3 and compiled it
with emacs, and with a pointer to my actual gnus directory, and so far
it seems to be fine.
