The function nnmail-remove-list-identifiers currently check for the
existence of Re: in the subject, but as we know many mail programs
adds a lot of strange things instead of Re:.

WIBNI nnmail-remove-list-identifiers did the tests

-(concat "^Subject: +\\(R[Ee]: +\\)*\\(" regexp " *\\)")
+(concat "^Subject: +\\(" gnus-subject-re-regexp " +\\)*\\(" regexp " *\\)")

and

-(re-search-forward "^Subject: +\\(\\(R[Ee]: +\\)+\\)R[Ee]: +"
+(re-search-forward (concat "^Subject: +\\(\\(" gnus-subject-re-regexp
+ "+\\)+\\)" gnus-subject-re-regexp " +")

respectively?

Where gnus-subject-re-regexp is similar to message-subject-re-regexp
(I could not find such a variable, replace with whatever appropriate).

Well, couldn't we use `message-subject-re-regexp'?

Lars, none of Jonas' articles are appearing on news.gnus.org. Could
you take a look at why.

(the only odd thing I can see about them are the very long msg-id's).

Hm... odd. Can't see anything in particular in the logs.

They appear on news.gmane.org, though. :-)

Maybe the recent bounce probe about one of Jonas' messages offers some
hints <news:E1BET2b-0003SM-00@malifon.math.uh.edu>:

------ pipe to |/usr/local/bin/news-post gnus.ding
       generated by ding-moderator@quimby.gnus.org ------

failed to post `-': (441) 437 No colon-space in "Original-Received: " header at /usr/local/bin/nntp-post line 158.

Hm... well, the Gmane mail-to-news scripts are way more resilient
than the ones on quimby.gnus.org; that's for sure. But I'm not quite
sure what this is supposed to mean. Perhaps it's that old inn bug
where a header that looks like

  Something:
    And here's the continuation line

is interpreted as an empty header?

Yeah, that one may still be around even in the latest versions. I'll try
to take a crack at fixing it.
