In message mode on Emacs 20.7, I use the following menu:

Edit -> Text Properties -> Background color -> other

This prompts me for a Background color:

I answer "red" and get the following error:

Face bg:red not configured for Message mode

I think this will not have any effect in message mode as we are using
font-lock, anyway.  Should that part of the menu therefore be
disabled?  It seems that setting the face, foreground and background
color will all cause an error.

Note that adding justification, or making text invisible, does in fact
work.
