This one has been around since the pre 5.0 days.  When Gnus starts
printing dots during an NNTP transfer, the dots eventually disappear
and the minibuffer is left blank though transfer appears to be still
taking place.  I've seen this on Emacs 19.30 as well as XEmacs 19.12
through 19.14.
