Just a wild guess: did you put this in gnus-select-method?
If so, move it to gnus-secondary-select-methods and try again.
FYI, many users including me like to set gnus-select-method to nnnil and
put everything in secondary select methods. Even I wanna suggest remove
gnus-select-method and change gnus-secondary-select-methods to
gnus-select-methods and make nnnil the default. This may avoid some
mistakes and documentation can be a little shorter.
