IMAP articles changing from ?/!/E to O

Folks:

I subscribe to two IMAP servers (Courier-IMAP 2.2.1p2/FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE
and Cyrus IMAP 2.0.16/FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE-p9) and have been bumping into
a few inconveniences as of late.

- From time to time, articles that I've marked expired, ticked or dormant
will switch their flag to old (O) for no apparant reason.  This usually
happens after I've entered/exited the Summary Buffer a few times.

- From Gnus' (5.10.6) perspective, both are online and I have disabled
the agent in the Server Buffer.  Disabling the agent seemed to solve
this problem for a few months, but it has resurfaced.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
